ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL INFLUENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP ACTIVITIES IN SOKOTO METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study analyzed the cultural influence on women’s entrepreneurship development in Sokoto Metropolis, Nigeria. This paper stem from a post-graduate thesis that was self-sponsored, all procedures performed were in accordance with ethical standard.  The population of the study consists of one hundred and fifty-three (153) women’s owned registered enterprises in the Metropolis. The study employed a stratified random sampling technique to select the sample as a cohort to accommodate and provide a fair representation of different strata in the population. Thus, one hundred and fifty-three owners of enterprises were administered questionnaires, of which 101 were completed and retrieved. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings reveal that culture has a significant influence on women’s entrepreneurship activities in the study area, and some cultural barriers deter women from exploiting their entrepreneurial potential. The study recommends that the government implement policies aimed at reducing cultural influence on women’s enterprise activities, thereby providing an enabling environment that supports women’s involvement in entrepreneurship activities in the area. Similarly, support from husbands/guardians of women through financial and moral motivations encourages them to engage in business ventures.

THE ROLE OF E LEARNING IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASS: REVEALING THE BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF ITS ADOPTION IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the role of e‑learning in the English language class: Revealing the benefits  and challenges of its adoption in primary education. It explains the concept of e-learning in primary education and types of e-learning. This study reviews literature and gives a scholarly background to the study by reviewing some contributions made by various researchers and institutions on the concept of e-learning, particularly its usage in teaching and learning in primary educational institutions. It unveils some views that people and institutions have shared globally on the adoption and integration of e-learning technologies in education through surveys and other observations. The paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of its adoption and implementation. The major conclusion of the study is that its adoption in primary education will increased learner’s access to information and provide a rich environment for collaboration among pupils which will improved academic standards. The paper then recommends that primary, secondary schools and tertiary institution management should make a consorted effort to provide e-learning environments that would enhance student performances in schools and also facilitate their self-development efforts.

PERCEIVED RELEVANCE AND IMPACTS OF REHABILITATION PROGRAMMES FOR DESTITUTE IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the perceived relevance and impact of rehabilitation programmes for destitute in Northern Nigeria. The objectives of the study include; to identify the programmes and determine the skills that are provided at the rehabilitation centres in Northern Nigeria, to determine the relevance and examine the impacts of rehabilitation programmes and services to destitute in Northern Nigeria and to investigate the challenges of the rehabilitation centres in the provision of programmes and services to destitute in Northern Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. All Clients of the rehabilitation centres and their Officials totaling to 11,350 was used as population of the study. The sample for the study was 335 Clients and 57 Officials from 19 rehabilitation centres selected through simple random technique. Two research instruments were developed by the researcher, questionnaire and interview schedule were used to collect data from the sampled population. The instruments were subjected to face and content validity by experts. A reliability coefficient of 0.79 was obtained for the questionnaire using PPMC. Data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage for research questions one and two, while frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to answer research question three, four, five and six. Findings of the study revealed that skills provided at the rehabilitation centres in Northern Nigeria included mat weaving, cloth knitting, tailoring, shoe making, rope making, carpentry, basket weaving and poultry keeping, while programmes provided at the rehabilitation centres in Northern Nigeria included; educational programmes which comprises of basic literacy, post literacy, educational counseling, Braille literacy for the visually impaired, sign language, religious/moral instruction and mobility and orientation, medical programmes comprises treatment and evaluation of the eye, ear and throat, physical therapy for the physically challenged, medical consultation and treatment, health education, medical counseling and referral services. The programmes and skills such as mat weaving, rope making, and cloth knitting provided at the rehabilitation centres are discovered to be irrelevant while tailoring, carpentry and poultry keeping are found to be relevant to the clients. Based on the findings the study recommended that modern skills such as tailoring (fashion designing), carpentry (furniture/interior decoration), modern ICT skills, welding, grinding, barbing saloon, soap making and make-up should be provided at the rehabilitation centres to replace the obsolete ones and  facilities at the rehabilitation centres should be provided in good state of condition for the comfort of the clients. While adequate funding, effective social welfare policy, adequate supply of training equipments, qualified personnel to run the centres should be adequately put in place to enhance provision of relevant and impactful programmes for destitute in Northern, Nigeria.

HATRED AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN NORTHERN NIGERIA: THE IMPACT OF A HUSBAND’S DOMINEERING AND CONTROLLING BEHAVIOR

ABSTRACT

Controlling and domineering behaviors of husbands are hazardous factors for women’s experiences of physical, sexual, and emotional violence in Nigeria. Previous studies imply that husbands’ controlling and domineering behavior may also influence women’s justification of wife beating in patriarchal society. Consistently, it was hypothesized that the cultural justification of violence against the wife would influence the relationship between the husband’s controlling and domineering behavior and the three types of violence the wife experiences. The study included 1,480 married women drawn from a representative regional sample in northern Nigeria. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Based on the cultural justification for violence against wives and husbands through domineering and controlling behavior, a correlational relationship was examined. Regression analyses were conducted to analyze the contributions of cultural justification of violence against wives and husband behavior to the three types of women’s violence experiences. Findings indicate that women who justified cultural acceptance of violence against their wives experienced more physical, sexual, and emotional violence. In conclusion, the relationship between culture and justification of violence against the wife still persists with physical, sexual, and emotional violence in the context of the husband’s controlling and domineering behavior. As a result, reorienting gender roles in matrimony is required to reverse the heinous trend of wife beating.

RESIDENTS OF BWARI IN THE FCT OF ABUJA’S PERCEPTION OF CRISIS FATIGUE AND ITS EFFECTS

ABSTRACT

The study examined how residents of the Bwari community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja, Nigeria, perceived their experiences with crisis weariness because of threats from kidnappers and killer herdsmen. This study looked at the incidence of psychological crisis fatigue among Bwari Area Council people as a result of an upsurge in kidnappings and killer herdsmen. The purpose of the study was to ascertain how crisis fatigue, which has been brought on by the ongoing murders and concerns of death caused by Killer herders, has affected Bwari villagers. The primary objectives of the study’s descriptive survey research design were three research questions. A purposive sampling strategy was used to select 990 respondents for the sample from villages across the Bwari Arean council of the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. The researcher developed a 30-item questionnaire to ask the respondents about their encounters with crisis weariness. To evaluate the data, straightforward percentages and frequency counts were employed. The study’s conclusions showed that Bwari residents had a poor understanding of crisis fatigue and its detrimental effects on their mental health. The research accorded the general public’s ignorance of crisis fatigue excellent marks. For instance, 98.65 percent of respondents lacked access to knowledge on any kind of help for coping with crisis fatigue, 100 percent of respondents had a negative opinion of crisis fatigue, 99.81 and 99.42 percent of respondents lacked protection from mental health issues, and so forth. The situation rendered the responders more prone to pessimism and sad emotions. Based on these, the researcher provided a framework for community counselling treatments for all Nigerians who are struggling with insecurity and crisis weariness, not just Bwari people. The removal of the root causes of crisis fatigue across the nation is where the Nigerian government should concentrate most of its efforts.

INTEGRATION OF CULTURAL FEATURES IN THE DESIGN OF MULTIMEDIA STUDIOS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The constant evolution of culture has created new hybrids between art, film, media, advertising, journalism, architecture, and many other spheres that have an impact on human culture. These hybrids sometimes call for a paradigm shift or at least challenge our cultural philosophies or ideologies. As a result of technological transformation through industrialization, most public buildings in Nigeria are beginning to lack its indigenous Architecture within their cultural context. In addition, Studies have shown that most public buildings in Nigeria are lacking indigenous people’s spatial needs and cultural values and they are profound among the minority ethnic groups. As such, a public building such as a media house ought to reflect the culture of its location. This study focuses on evaluating the application of Nupe cultural features in the design of a multimedia studio in Bida. Media houses were selected randomly in Bida, Niger state to know how modernization has influenced the rich culture of the Nupe people. The research method employed in this study is the qualitative research method and the process of observation has been employed for gathering data. An observation schedule was used as an instrument for data collection and these data were sampled using the non-random sampling method. These data were analyzed through content analysis and the findings showed that the cultural feature has not been properly adopted in multimedia designs. The study concludes that a public building such as a media house should reflect the culture of its location and this can be achieved by prioritizing cultural artistic inputs on building by professionals and by extension, promoting the culture and art of its people.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHERS’ JOB SATISFACTION AND JOB PERFORMANCE IN YOBE STATE PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS, NIGERIA WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SCHOOLS IN POTISKUM AND DAMATURU ZONAL INSPECTORATE DIVISION

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the Relationship between Teachers’ Job Satisfaction and Job Performance in Senior Secondary Schools in Yobe State – Nigeria. The problem in which the researcher intends to investigate is to examine whether there is a significant relationship between teachers’ job satisfaction (such as salary packages, in-service allowance, promotion and housing facilities) and job performance (such as mastering of subject matter, classroom management, punctuality, good lesson delivery and update of school records} in senior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to examine: the relationship between teachers” salary packages and job performance in senior secondary schools in Yobe state of Nigeria; the relationship between teachers’ promotion and job performance in senior secondary schools in Yobe state, Nigeria; the relationship between teachers’ in-services allowances and job performance in senior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria; the relationship between teachers” housing facilities and job performance in senior secondary schools in Yobe state, Nigeria. The methodology used for the study adopt correlational research design, the population of the study was all the teachers in senior secondary school, 359 teachers was used as sample for the study and the researcher adopt simple random sampling techniques and structured questionnaire was used as the research instrument, the questionnaire was validated by the supervisor and other lecturers, descriptive statistics and simple regression analysis was used in analyzing the data. The following are the findings of the study: Salary package is high in senior secondary schools in Yobe State with a grand mean of 4.03; Promotion is high in senior secondary schools in Yobe State with a grand mean of 4.12; Incentive is high in senior secondary schools in Yobe State with a grand mean of 3.74; Housing facility is high in senior secondary schools in Yobe State with a grand mean of 3.76; Teachers ‘job performance is high in senior secondary schools in Yobe State with a grand mean of 4.12; Salary package and teachers ‘job performance were found to have a statistically significant positive relationship in senior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria (r value = 0.737); Promotion and teachers’ job performance were found to have a statistically significant positive relationship in senior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria (r value = 0.707); Incentive and teachers’ job performance were found to have a statistically significant positive relationship in senior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria (r value = 0.798); Housing facility and teachers’ job performance were found to have a statistically significant positive relationship in senior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria (r value = 0.707). This study suggested that similar study should be conducted in junior secondary schools in Yobe State, Nigeria.  This is also suggest that, relationship between motivation and teachers ‘job performance could be investigated in senior secondary schools.

PROTECT ELECTORAL INTEGRITY AND ENHANCE VOTER PARTICIPATION: CONTEXTUAL ROLE FOR INEC

ABSTRACT

There is a growing reduction in voter participation and citizen involvement in electoral system in Nigeria. Scholars and political analysts have advanced reasons for low turnout in Nigerian elections; for some, electoral fraud, malpractice and lack of electoral integrity seemed to discourage electorates in voting while others maintained that national electoral management body is incapacitated to uphold the virtue of electoral integrity. However, the constitutional role of INEC is not yet examined to juxtapose its relevance in this direction, therefore this paper unveiled the contextual role of INEC in ensuring electoral integrity and promoting voter participation in Nigerian elections. The paper conceived electoral integrity in terms of legal and international framework practices for free and fair election. Having identified numerous constitutional roles of INEC in maintaining electoral integrity and enhancing voter participation, the paper argued that electoral integrity plays a pivotal role in building public trust in electoral institutions, processes and determining the level of electorate involvement in an election. It was therefore concluded that the integrity of Nigerian election rests largely on INEC through transparency, use of rule of law, and strong capacity affinity with other stakeholders.

POLITICAL INSTABILITY AND CRISES OF GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF ABUBAKAR GIMBA’S FOOTPRINTS

ABSTRACT

This paper critically examines the impact of political instability and the crises of governance in Nigeria as depicted by Abubakar Gimba in his political novel, Footprints. Political instability is a common occurrence in many African countries in general and Nigeria in particular; which always affect her unity and peaceful co-existence. I t is important to note that political instability arises from the prevailing incidences of perceived social injustice and discrimination among the citizens and the inability of the government to address the challenges the masses are faced with. Furthermore, there has been a recurrent and sustained argument that the Nigerian state, like her counterparts in Africa and other countries of the developing world, underperforms due to lack of state capacity to deal with the contemporary complexities of governance. The paper draws it data from secondary sources by using excerpts from the novel, Footprints, in analyzing instances of political instability and crises of governance in the country. The literary theory used for this paper is critical realism. The Nigerian leadership has failed in several areas prominent among which include security, absence of rule of law and the provision of visionary leadership, electoral malpractice among others.

PHONOLOGICAL AND GRAPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF OLU’FUNMI OSATO-OSAWAYE’S UNTANGLE

ABSTRACT

Phonological and graphological analysis of Olu’Funmi Osato-Osawaye’s Untangle was carried out. The objectives of the research are to identify the various phonological and graphological devices used, classify the devices into these two levels of language and explain the effect of the devices on the style of the content in the novel. The study follows the Hallidayan (1985) grammatical model as a theoretical framework. The data for the research was obtained from the first three chapters of each part (parts one – part three) of Untangle by Osawaye. The data collected from thirty-four (34) pages were, thus, presented. The study revealed that alliteration, assonance and rhymes were dissected at the phonological level to distinguish the articulating sounds. Lastly, the novelist used italicization so profoundly at the graphological level, some of which express thoughts, soliloquies, non-English words, and rhetorical questions. The employment of these tools in the analysis of literary text seems to enhance a better understanding of such text and the author.

ASSESSMENT OF STAFF DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE AMONG JOURNALISTS” IN SELECTED BROADCAST STATIONS IN ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined the staff development practice among journalists in selected broadcast stations in Abeokuta. The study among other objectives examined the regularity of staff development and training carried out in selected radio stations alongside factors responsible for staff development in the selected stations. Survey method was adopted while total population sampling and quota sampling technique was used to select respondents from Family, Sweet, and OGBC radio stations. Findings from the study revealed that more than average (56%) respondents affirmed that the condition of staff development was fair enough. Results also indicated that the majority (83%) acknowledged that staff development is once a year in their stations while the majority (67%) have never benefited from the staff development programme in their stations. The study, however, recommended that broadcast stations should provide adequate ethical trainings and developmental programmes for its workforce regularly to enhance productivity and avoid breach of ethical standards.

Entrepreneurship remains the most vital Ingredients for curtailing insecurity and unemployment in Nigerian. Despite the abundant job offers, entrepreneurship provides, in the economy, the sector remain untapped and the potentials were not fully exploited for the provision of employment opportunities in the economy. It is the quite evident, that insecurity and unemployment have a direct linkage affecting the peaceful co-existence of the people in Nigeria. This paper therefore aimed at examining how entrepreneurship skills, competencies and potentials will address the problems of insecurity and unemployment in Nigeria.

THE APPLICATION OF JEREMY BENTHAM’S THEORY OF UTILITARIANISM IN EXPLAINING NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY

ABSTRACT

Utilitarianism is an ethical and philosophical theory that states that the best action is the one that maximises utility, which is usually defined as that which produces the greatest well-being of the greatest number of people. The most potent way of determining the usefulness of any good theory is to apply it to reality in order to know the extent to which it can accommodate the existing realities in society. This paper examines Jeremy Bentham’s utilitarian theory and its relevance in explaining Nigerian state with reference to democracy. The question is does Jeremy Bentham’s theoretical postulation apply to Nigeria’s democratic governance? Why is leadership a critical issue affecting governance in Nigeria’s democratic system? This paper critically discusses Jeremy Bentham’s Utilitarianism as it relates to democracy in Nigeria. The paper is substantially qualitative and descriptive in nature. Data for the study is obtained mainly from secondary sources such as text books, journals, articles, online publications. However, it discovered that, the Nigerian state has failed to promote the utility of its citizens in the aspect of democracy, human rights and ensuring security of lives and property . Many years after Nigeria Political Sovereignty, the prevailing ideas in the democratic literature maintain that democracy has failed and its consolidation has remained elusive more so, the fundamental features of democratic governance has been undermined by the myriad of contemporary socio-economic and political issues faced by Nigerians which include insecurity, poverty, corruption and election malpractice.

THE ROLE OF PRIVATE SECURITY COMPANIES IN CRIME PREVENTION AND CONTROL IN BAUCHI LGA

ABSTRACT

This research is set out to examine the role of PSCs in crime prevention and control in Bauchi LGA. The research is aimed to determine the factors that predisposes the emergence of PSCs in combating crime, to study the clients of PSCs in Bauchi LGA, to identify the strategies used by PSCs in combating crime, to assess the achievements of PSCs in combating crime and to find out the challenges of PSCs in crime prevention and control. The target population is both males and females of Bauchi local government who are between 18 years and above. The study employed survey design method. Six wards were selected to serve as clusters. And in each of the clusters 20 respondents were selected using simple random sampling (SRS). The total is 120 respondents. For the qualitative data, 5 respondents were selected purposively; this comprise of comprise 2 NSCDC officers, 2 private security guards and 1 individual client. The sub total of respondents for quantitative data (120) and the sub-total of qualitative data (5) give the sample size of 125 respondents for the study. One hundred and twenty questionnaires were administered to the respondents but only 116 were completed and returned. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22 was used to process the quantitative data and the qualitative data collected through IDI were transcribed and used to complement the quantitative data. Situational Crime Prevention Theory were used as theoretical frame of reference for the study. The study revealed that, PSCs emerges as a result of the high rate of crime. However, risk of violent attacks, lack of logistics, lack of adequate training and poor wages and working condition are the major problems confronting PSCs in combating crime. The study therefore, recommends that there is the need for establishing mutual understanding between the PSCs and the formal security agencies which will help to improve PSCs in combating crime. ABSTRACT

The main thrust of this study is to examine the impact of adopting African Developmnt Bank-community based agricultural and rural development project among rural farmers on maize output in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study utilized primary data sources. The sample consists of 361 beneficiaries drawn from the three participating local government areas selected from the three senatorial zones of the state. More so, 361 non-beneficiaries were randomly selected from the syndicated study area. A well-structured questionnaire was then utilized to elicit information from the respondents. Thereafer, the logit regression method was applied, hence, the forward stepwise wald was used to assess the models’ classification accuracy and goodness of fit. The method generated four (4) steps, but for the purposes of determining accuracy in terms of maize output classification, attention was focused on step (4), which yielded the highest classification accuracy with the highest adoption of the explanatory variables, compared to step (2) and (3). The result found that the adoption of IMS, FLW, FET, and AGT had a significant positive impact on maize output in the study area at 5% level of significance. Therefore, the study recommended that government should encourage rural farmers to join farmers union in other to benefit from similar opportunities, like the (AFDB-CBARDP) and also encourage savings amongst the farmers. Additionally, the government should step up its efforts in linking the rural areas to urban cities through quality road infrastructures.

ABSTRACT

Of all human body parts, the tongue is an exceptional part that is destined to function in bi-polar or contradictory ways; to comfort and discomfort; to praise and curse; to elevate and pull down; etc. That is why the social well-being or otherwise of human-beings, their successes and failures, fortunes and misfortunes depend to a large on how wisely human tongues are being used. This paper explores the positions of both the Arabic language and the Quran regarding the powers inherent in the human tongue to ensure good interpersonal relationships and communal peace if it is properly and wisely used. A number of Arabic statements and Quranic verses are examined to achieve this. The paper concludes that conflicts and crises shall reduce considerably in every human society if humans would use their tongues cautiously and wisely. The paper recommends, among others, that every person should control their tongue particularly during the time of anger so that their utterances may be justifiable.

THE IMPACT OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSBILITY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING COMPANIES IN NORTH EAST NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has evolved from a theoretical concept to a complex managerial tool used to build a company’s reputation and enhance its competitive advantage hence currently an integral part of business strategy to enhance firm performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of corporate social responsibility on organizational performance in north east Nigeria. Manufacturing is a key driver of global trade and highly espoused in north east Nigeria development plan. The specific objectives and hypotheses sought to examine and test the effect of firms’ sensitivity to multiple stakeholders comprising employees, customers, community and government on financial and non-financial firm performance. The study was anchored on stakeholder, resource based and social contract theories. Descriptive survey research design was use to explain existing CSR phenomenon in relation to firm performance.. Primary data was obtained by use of a self-administered questionnaire and secondary data obtained from organizations’ annual reports, journals, books, researches, theses, dissertations, articles and company websites by use of a similar questionnaire as used in primary data, after the response, to validate the primary data. Regression analysis was used to test the relationship between CSR and firm performance by use of SPSS, where data was presented in descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that customer, community and government relations have positive and significant effect on performance of manufacturing firm in north east Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

The potentials of financial sector in both developed and developing nations is a crucial sector in evolving and enhancing of major contributing sector to economic growth and the well-being of the people in the light of industrialization, manufacturing, services, agriculture, among others. Despite Nigeria taking lead in almost all the major food and cash crop production in the whole world that numerous products can be extracted from crops by this way Nigeria can feed her growing population and boost her export, this would translate to diversifying the economy by mean of creating alternative sources of income earnings. Hence, the study employed error correction mechanism to examine the role played by the financial sector to the industrial performance in particular the agro-allied industry. Secondary time series data were used and series of tests were performed using E-veiw econometric package. The stability of the data after the diagnoses test revealed that agricultural output has direct relationship with the growth of agro-allied industries which is in line with the a priori expectation that most of the needed raw materials are supplied as the output from agriculture. Consequently, credit finance also recorded positive relationship. Therefore, the findings suggest that credit finance and supporting scheme to agro-enterprise is most pertinent in the development of the sector not forgetting the key role of agriculture in this race.

THE STRICT COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENT UNDER THE LAW OF DOCUMENTARY CREDITS: AN APPRAISAL

ABSTRACT

The International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC’s) fifth revision to the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP 500) was found wanting in regulating the process and operation of documentary credits, which is the popular and most preferred method of financing international trade. The current applicable revised 6th edition of the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (the UCP 600) which came into force in 2007 was therefore the ICC initiative fashioned out to rectify some of the deficiencies of the former UCP – the UCP 500 of 1994. This dissertation discusses and critically analyses the rationale behind the transition as well as the major changes witnessed after the transition from the UCP 500 to the UCP 600. The dissertation evaluates the genesis, process, evolution, information and the implications the revised ICC regime has on the key players in the sector- the importers, bankers, exporters, carriers as well as insurers. The dissertation argues that the UCP 600 has indeed tried by taking into consideration the interests of the key players in the sector- the bankers as well as the merchants. This is a welcome development by the ICC in bringing in some positive changes in the current applicable UCP. Finally, the dissertation, looking at the age of the current UCP 600 (Fifteen years in operation) and the technological advancements being witnessed around the world, recommends that it would not be inappropriate if the current UCP 600 will undergo some amendments. This is especially important so that the UCP 600  would conform to the ever-changing  nature of cross-border trade around the globe in continuing to play its all-important role of facilitating the financing of international commercial contracts.

ABSTRACT

Today’s highly competitive environment, technological advancements, increasing customer demands and an increasingly dynamic economic environment pose the world’s greatest challenges to the telecommunications sector. Therefore, this study examines the mediating role of organizational culture between service quality, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty, with particular reference to the MTN, Nigeria. The survey was distributed to 470 of the MTN Nigeria employees. Data analysis was performed with the structural equation modeling using STATA version 15. The results reveal that service quality was significantly correlated with customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. The study also confirms that service quality is highly related to organizational culture. It also shows that corporate culture has a significant impact on customer loyalty. It was also shown that organizational culture partially mediates between service quality, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty. It was concluded that organizational culture and service quality are important factors in customer satisfaction and loyalty. Therefore, the study recommends that the Nigerian telecom industry management needs to continue to introduce a culture of service quality across the different services offered. This will go a long way to achieve a leading position in the global Telecommunication space by 2030

IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION, ECONOMIC GROWTH AND LABOUR PARTICIPATION ON NET MIGRATION IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Migration is fuelled by a number of factors which include economic, educational, marital and work-related factors.  It is also fuelled by global integration of world States.  Globalization brings about economic, social as well as cultural interconnectedness and this greases the wheels of international migration.  Globalization is a multi-dimensional process of unprecedented rapid and revolutionary growth in the extensiveness and intensity of interconnectedness on a global scale.  This work portrays the contributions of economic growth, globalization, unemployment and labour participation to migration in Nigeria using Ordinary Least square.  The findings reveal that there exists a negative significant relationship between net migration on one hand and foreign direct investment, economic growth and labour force participation on the other hand. Unemployment had a positive and significant relationship with net migration too.  All these are true in the long run analysis. In the short run, FDI, LFP and one period lag of UNE were negative and statistically significant while current period UNE was positive and statistically significant.  Only FDI and net migration had a significant unidirectional causality from net migration to FDI.  The paper recommends that Government should help improve labour participation by fighting unemployment through better business environments that will ensure that remittances have a good place for investment in Nigeria amongst others.

ABSTRACT

In Jema’a Local Government Area (LGA), the environment deteriorates daily due to natural and human factors with human activities being the key roots of environmental degradation which include open grazing, pollution, deforestation, and unlawful pasting of posters in public places. Photography is a vital tool for visual communication, and photographers have long used it to reveal issues that affect people and their environments. Therefore, this paper intends to identify the major causes of environmental degradation in Jema’a LGA. The paper aims at raising environmental consciousness through photographic images of degraded scenes of some environments in Jema’a LGA. This practice-based photography showed how impactful photographs are in conveying environmental messages in other to raise people’s consciousness about the environment and shape their attitudes towards environmental conservation. Recommendations were made to help the government, NGOs and the general public to take necessary actions toward improving and protecting the environment. This paper will also provide motivation for further research in the field of photography.

Religion as a concept has attracted various definitions and explanations over the years. In the words of various sociological scholars it is considered any relationship between man and the super- humans. To certain scholars of various works of life religion and religious groups may attract diverse meanings. Nigeria no doubt has been seen or known to be a country with different religious inclinations. It will not be out of place to say at this point that certain people see religious groups in Nigeria as just a few. That actually is not true. Nigeria has many religious groups in it. Be that as it may. The question is that from sociological angle or perspective, religion is considered one of the sub-structures making up the society. That in essence underlines its imperativeness. But every right thinking person will ask is to wht extent has religion in Nigeria played the expected roles that it is expected to play?  If no, what factors has actually hindered it from carrying out the expected functions. This research is occasioned by the fact that religion has fallen short in it discharging the roles it ought to discharge without anyone having sufficient answers to factors have been responsible. Various data collection techniques served as instruments of data collection  in the course of the study. They included oral interviews, use of questionnaire, textbooks, the internet and journals to mention just a few. The interactionist  school of thought was adopted for this study to serve as theoretical framework. LOCALIZATION OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Petroleum resource dependent Nigerian economy along with poor governance, challenges the Nigerian textile industry. Moreover, there is a sheer lack of political will to formulate policies directed at industrial growth by the Nigerian political class. The growth of textile industry is essential if Nigeria is to foster structural change and translate its potentials. This article examines how poor policy implementation stunted the development of the Nigerian textile industry from 1985 to 2015. The textile industry’s decline reflects internal challenges and the failure to provide supportive policy measures and critical infrastructure for the growth of the sector. This is also related to Nigeria’s overreliance on petroleum at the expense of other economic sectors. This article focuses on the neglect faced by the textile industry.  Our findings indicate that overreliance on petroleum resources emboldened imports of foreign made products especially from China. It calls for the application of an industrial policy to increase the competitiveness of the Nigerian textile industry globally. The article provides an understanding into the reasons for the collapse of the textile industry. It also contributes to the need for industrial policy consideration for resource dependent economies.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND TAX ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR OF LISTED NIGERIAN COMPANIES

ABSTRACT

Over the years tax compliance in Nigeria has been a challenging economic reality due to harsh and volatile business environment. This paper is designed to examine the effect of corporate governance and ethical tax behaviour of list listed companies in Nigeria from 2015 to 2020. The descriptive research design was employed and 57 listed firms on the Nigeria stock exchange were sampled based on firms whose financial reports and tax returns files were available and accessed for this study. Corporate mechanism data was sourced from published financial reports of the sampled firms while tax compliance data were extracted from the tax returns file submitted to FIRS by the sampled firms for the research period. The study measures tax ethical behaviour in terms of timely filing of tax returns form, completeness of tax returns, and accuracy in income declaration on a scale of 0-3.  In each year codes 1, 2 0r 3 were used to score ethical tax behaviour depending on the extent of compliance. Otherwise, 0 is scored for noncompliance. The regression analysis was done and the fixed and random effect variant of the regression model for panel data was applied to the data using E-View statistical software. The findings supports the hypothesis that large proportion of independent directors in the management structure decreases tax sharp practices and increases tax ethical behaviour. The result implies that independent board members play a front role in deciding whether a firm engages in tax unethical behaviour or not. The study recommends that corporate entities should maintain moderate board size, use internationally recognised audit firm, encourage managerial ownership and engage investors as independent directors.

ABSTRACT

The alarming level of insecurity in Nigeria has fueled the crime rate and terrorists’ attacks in different parts of the country, leaving unpalatable consequences for the nation’s economy and its growth. Over the last four decades, Nigeria’s North West has witnessed waves of violence including sectarian clashes, religious extremist/militancy and electoral violence. This paper therefore examines the effect of insecurity on economic activities in North-West, Nigeria. The study revealed that the productive aspect of most manufacturing business depends largely on the availability and regular supply of raw materials for production, of which insecurity has cut off the supply of such raw materials hence, jeopardizing production activities. Other matters of concern include, insecurity affects marketing of finished product as there is a continuous exodus from areas of insecurity.  There is also an increase in security spending as most business organizations operating in Nigeria spend a lot in maintaining private security outfits. The destruction of their business building, properties and equipment is tantamount to loss of capital which has ruined not a few businesses in North-West, Nigeria. The study suggests that Nigeria’s Federal authorities and State Governments in the North West should work more closely, not only to heal longstanding rifts within communities and curb violence, but also to address the structural causes of insecurity in the region.

IMPACT OF GIRL-CHILD EARLY MARRIAGE ON THE LEVEL OF DIVORCE AMONG SOME NORTHERNERS IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study examined the impact of girl-child early marriage on the level of divorce among some Northerners in Kano State, Nigeria. Two research hypotheses guided the study. The study was limited to underaged married women from four local government areas of Kano State namely Nasarawa, Dawakin Tofa, Sumaila and Takai. Descriptive survey research design was used in the study. Two hundred (200) underaged married women were sampled using simple random sampling technique. A 20 item Researcher constructed questionnaire titled Impact of Early Marriage on Level of Divorce Questionnaire (IEMLDQ) was used for data collection. The questionnaire has a reliability coefficient of 0.76. The data collected were analysed using t-test statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. The results of the analysis showed that there is a significant impact of girl-child early marriage on the level of divorce and there is a significant impact of maturity on the level of divorce among some northerners. Counselling implications based on the findings were discussed among them is that counsellors should campaign against girl-child early marriage by creating awareness about negative impact of girl-child early marriage. Based on these findings, the study recommends among others that people from northern states should be counselled on the dangers of girl-child early marriage and their impact on level of divorce. Again, parents should be encouraged to send their girl- child to school because education is the key.

This study examine the impact of exchange rate on foreign direct investment inflows in Nigeria, adopting annual time series data relating to exchange rate volatility, foreign direct investment, GDP growth rate 2001-2020. Autoregressive technique was used. The findings of the study indicated that exchange rate volatility has a positive but insignificant impact on Nigeria’s foreign direct investment inflows also GDP has positive but insignificant impact on foreign direct investment inflows in Nigeria. The study recommends that government ensure policies that will boost investors’ confidence and enable foreign companies to invest in the country’s economy. Exchange rate stability and national security is very important in attracting foreign investment inflows and avoid unnecessary reprinting of national currency.

ABSTRACT

Hospitality graduates must be prepared to lead a diverse employee population. This study helps students gain the perspective of non-local speakers. It identifies barriers that occur in a multi-cultural environment and provides tools to communicate despite language hurdles. This qualitative study found that a combination of gestures and demonstration were the most valuable non-verbal forms of communication. Participants could empathize with non-local speakers even though they believed immigrants should learn enough of the language to be effective. The participants thought that it was difficult to stress the exact details when leading non-local speakers, particularly in the area of food safety.
