ABSTRACT
This study examines media consumption pattern and media literacy among secondary school students in Abeokuta Municipal, with the main objective of investigating the influence of media literacy on consumption pattern of secondary schools in Abeokuta. Survey design was used to study students of two secondary schools- MACJOB Grammar School (government owned) and Sacred Heart College (Privately owned) in Abeokuta as study population of 429 from which 120 students were sampled using multi stage sampling technique. Data was analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. Findings reveal that students know the motives behind media contents which influence their consumption, however they know little about the influence of media consumption on them saying they do what they see in the media as many of the students could not describe reality or otherwise of the contents they view in the media. Also, it revealed that majority of the students (54%) learnt something in the media which influenced their language use, relationship, dressing and more. It thereby concluded that secondary school students have knowledge of the motives behind what they consume in the media but do not know the influence of what they consume on them which calls for intensive media literacy. It is recommended for parents therefore to shape their teenagers’ exposure to media content and teach them the right knowledge before they cultivate knowledge from the media and that Nigerian government should enrich secondary school curriculum to incorporate basic media subjects like civic education for proper media literacy.

THE IMPACT OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN EDUCATION RESEARCH
AJAH MERCY EBERECHI
School of General Studies, Department of Languages, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State
ABSTRACT
The key questions which have always been the focus of attention in foreign language teaching and learning address problems of how to encourage and motivate learners to study more effectively and how to educate teachers to make this happen. The present volume reflects a selection of themes and topics which take up some of these issues, presented and discussed at the Sieradz English Teaching and Research Forum organized by the Foreign Language Teacher Training College in Sieradz in April 2014. Drawing on a range of new developments in linguistic theory and foreign language pedagogy, this volume brings together theoretical perspectives and new empirical studies in the field of foreign language teaching and foreign language teacher education in Poland. My presentation at the conference (Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk 2014a) focused on the contribution of Cognitive Linguistics and language corpora to the analysis of English and Polish grammar and vocabulary and to the development of effective techniques of semantics- and grammar- awareness-raising with FL learners. The linguistic area discussed involved questions which arise with reference to time, temporality and time experience and their manifestation in language. These questions include a number of more specific issues. The first relates to the way the experience humans acquire and possess is organized in terms of a temporal framework and how this experience is expressed in the grammatical categories available in the languages they use. Another particular issue is how linguistic forms accommodate various types of time concepts and particularly temporal displacement, in which the actual temporal point of reference in a real context is different from that described or referred to in a linguistic utterance. The question of the nature of mental models language users develop to grasp and convey the notion of time, particularly in terms of the ongoing debate on the actual (physical and ontological) and cognitive (conceptual) position and functions of time, especially with reference to space, is another vast research area with direct relevance to foreign language awareness raising. Finally, the investigation aimed at uncovering the processes of native and non-native time acquisition, which provides new insight into FLT methodology employed in the teaching of temporal categories in non-native contexts. The basic conclusion from the reported study (see also Lewandowska- Tomaszczyk 2014) clearly points to the character of language research methodology, which combines cognitive linguistic analysis and usage- based implications, inferred from the analysis of large corpus-based materials. Effective FLT methods and techniques on the other hand are shown to involve both form- and meaning-focused techniques to facilitate language awareness-raising through grammar-discovery tasks, as first labelled by Ellis and Gaies (1998). The authors convincingly argue that FLT learners internalize those linguistic properties that they are ready to learn and the learning process passes through a series of transitional stages, in which learners first notice a pattern (Schmidt 2010) and gradually acquire a system to, at least partly, monitor its use, which is precisely what is needed in competent communication. The role and function of computerized language corpora, both national such as British National Corpus (BNC), Corpus of Contemporary American (COCA) or National Corpus of Polish (nkjp.pl), and learner collections of authentic language materials cannot be overestimated. Numerous publications (Granger et al. 2002) show a range of corpus- based approaches to interlanguage analysis, and the analysis presented at the conference (Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk 2014a) precisely identified the transitional stages in the process of learning English time-related concepts with Polish students as well as the direct pedagogical relevance of learner corpus work both in foreign language learning and teacher education.

ABSTRACT
This paper applies anthropological theory to explain how Mathematics teachers imbibed indigenous epistemologies in the teaching of pure and applied Mathematics in secondary schools in Nigeria. Data was collected using direct participation and observation method. Findings seem to indicate that ethnomathematics epistemologies can successfully be embedded in the teaching of pure and applied Mathematics in Nigerian Secondary Schools curriculum. Mathematics is needed to carry out our daily transactions and as such, no trading can take place without Mathematics. Generic argument for the inclusion of indigenous content within the mathematics curriculum is suggested. Secondly, several exemplar scenarios of teaching praxis including indigenous content are discussed. Finally, evidence on the utility of such exemplar scenarios for students learning in their mother- tongue and key processes and skills for working with indigenous communities are discussed.

ABSTRACT
The content of a curriculum is derivative from the yearnings and aspirations of the society it is meant to serve. Suffice is to say that Nigeria currently has such a working educational document, the contention is not on the basis of the availability but on the fact that the curriculum, as it is currently presented, is not and will never be everlastingly perfect to surmount current and future challenges. If the postulation of the imperfection of a curriculum is ascertain by all, then the existing framework, in the face of current security challenges, makes it desirable for a re-jiggling. This paper highlighted the missing link in the curriculum as it affects the study of visual arts by stressing the current position of societal needs, the paper also espoused the aspect of the role of art in the society that succinctly addresses the current security challenges and was also suggestive of what the content of the curriculum should entail, the paper was summed up with a conclusion that the solution to the current upheavals should be holistic.

ABSTRACT
Mathematics in general or geometry in particular, is not supposed to be learnt in passivity. In other words, the teaching of mathematics or geometry is supposed to be carried out such that students are made to think and to participate actively in the teaching/learning process. That is to say that teaching should be conducted such that opportunities are created for students to adequately explore the subject and think so as to enhance their potentials. Unfortunately, students are currently taught the subject by an approach which emphasizes routine arithmetic characterized by memorization and repetition. Consequently, students can only adequately carry out straight-forward computational procedures and tend to have a limited understanding of mathematical ideas. Hence they achieve poorly. Methods that can make students think and participate actively in the teaching/learning process need to be used. This study examined practical approaches to the teaching of the properties of plane shapes to beginning geometry students. Specifically, the study examined the use of mosaic or puzzle in the exploration of the properties of such plane figures as triangles, rectangles, trapezia, etc. In particular, the study explored the influence of these playful activities on students’ development of geometric thinking. The study employed the quasi-experimental design. A sample of one hundred and fifty (150) senior secondary two (SS2) Mathematics students randomly drawn from three clusters of schools was used. Ten research questions were used to guide the investigation and three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at the 0.05 level of significance. To collect data, the researchers used two instruments called the Geometric Thinking Development Test (GTDT) and the Geometry Achievement Test (GAT). Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistic. The results revealed that playful activities (Mosaic or Puzzle), fostered the development of geometric thinking and students in the playful classrooms achieved significantly better than their counterparts in the conventional lecture classrooms.

ABSTRACT
The article primarily focused on evaluating enumerative and faceted library classification schemes in guiding librarians to have principles and guidelines involves in classification system. five topics based on environmental studies were effectively evaluated to aid in deciding classification system for special libraries, applying environmental science topics. The article presented real-world classification in tables which identifies; the main subjects, the analysis of the subjects, the topics component concept, the form of the documents, the major discipline of the topic and additional comments, it also analysed the enumerative classification scheme, such as Dewey decimal classification (the DDC) as well the DDC suggested class marks. Additionally, it specifies breakdown of the number building from major class number to more specific class mark for the documents, with critical appraisal, essentially based on faceted classification scheme Universal decimal classification (the UDC) involving the UDC suggested class marks, breakdown of the number building showing main class number, the various basic UDC auxiliaries used for classifying the documents. The article concludes by summarising the practical exercise with critical evaluation using sources from notable professional scholars in librarianship
