A structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to determine the reliability coefficient and reliability of 0.96 was obtained. Data collected were analyzed with frequencies, table to answer the research question while the null hypothesis was tested with inferential statistics of chi-square (X2) at 0.05 alpha level of significance. In conclusion, the findings revealed that the incidence of drug use and abuse among Nigerian undergraduate was real and persuasive. Furthermore, availability influenced the used and abuse of drug among the students. Based on the findings from the study, it was recommended that students should minimized  the rate at which they use drugs without prescription from medical personnel, and finally the university authority should continue to update students on knowledge about effect of drug use and abuse by introducing drug education in the curricular and improve the already existing once in other to reduce drug use and abuse by Undergraduates from both Federal and State Universities in Northern State of Nigeria.

Five research questions were provided and answered. The research adopted questionnaire approach, using random sampling method as an instrument for selecting five Junior Secondary Schools and twenty students each of the selected schools. Data gathered were analysed using simple percentage and tables. The findings indicated that most Arabic Studies’ teachers in the zone were reluctant to implement the use of the instructional materials during the teaching and learning of Arabic Studies. Students were not all exposed to the use of instructional aids which led to the ineffective learning as well as their passive contribution in the classrooms during the lesson. It is recommended that the stakeholders in educational sector should rise up and take steps that could facilitate better teaching and learning of Arabic Studies. Governments at all levels should provide enough funds for procurement of materials needed in the schools. The schools inspectors should be mandated to carry out constant inspections to ensure that relevant materials were used in teaching. Teachers of Arabic Studies should shun their non-challant attitudes towards their chosen career and put their best to educational development, because, the subject is most dreaded one due to its nature.

ABSTRACT

The issue of the systematic destruction of image of the ruling class in postcolonial francophone African States and particularly that of the head of State is more preoccupying in freedom of tone and writing. If the societal writings consider the president of the Republic as a god , consideration brought in the ideology in place ,which works out his image :good orators,  intellectuals ,writers ,the governmental and international Media ,we however discover realistic pieces of writings with francophone African Writers, made up with humour ,irony and satire which systematically deconstruct the pseudo-godly image thus excessively degrading . Mongo Beti is one of the writers who makes the president of the Republic considered as a «République bananière», a genuine literary tool structuring his last three novels : L’histoire du fou (1994), Trop de soleil tue l’amour (19991),and Branle bas en noir et blanc (2000)

EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH FOR INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AND NEW DISCOVERIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA

Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) Ibadan-Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Societies all over the world depends on their indigenous knowledge to solve their day-to-day socio-economic problems, address various environmental challenges, and adapt to change.  In spite of the colonial administration and its associate viewing indigenous knowledge as being non-scientific, illogical and anti-development, the African indigenous communities have always found value in their own local forms of knowledge. The status and importance of such indigenous knowledge changed in the wake of the landmark 1997 Global Knowledge Conference (GKC) in Toronto. The conference emphasized the urgency of learning, preservation and exchange of indigenous knowledge. Such emphasis was expected to guarantee maximum exploitation of ind igneous knowledge for the common good of Africans. It therefore become necessary to discuss how African indigenous knowledge can be an important tool for enhancing teaching-learning process among the Africans in order to address any identified problem and to promote socio-economic development in Africa.  African indigenous knowledge identifies the needs of its people and tailors its traditional and informal system of education to foster development. The imposition of the modern or western education on Africa brought with it both “positive” and “negative” implications. The primary objective of this paper is to direct attention to the continuing disconnect between Africa’s indigenous knowledge systems and those imported and superimposed on the region through the education curricula.
