BARTHOLOMEW OLUFEMI OGUNBIYI

Department of Plant Biology, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Phenological studies are vital in the investigation of the factors that are paramount to the development of a given stage in a species. Although much information is available on the reproductive phenology of bryophytes in the tropical rainforest of southern Nigeria, little information is available in the guinea savanna biome of the country. This study investigated the reproductive phenology of selected mosses and liverworts in Kwara State, Nigeria. Bryophyte samples were randomly collected from different substrates across the study areas and taken to the laboratory for identification using standard methods. Stereomicroscope was used to assess the sex expression of each gametophyte and mean index values or maturity indices were calculated for each species. The frequencies of initial maturation stages of antheridia, archegonia and sporophytes were represented in developmental profile. The results showed that mosses and liverworts contained varying numbers of gametangia ranging from 1-30 antheridia per perigonium and 2-34 archegonia per perichaetium. Fertilization period was earlier in Barbula indica, Fissidens planifrons and Fissidens grandifolius and a bit later in other species. The reproductive phenology of the selected bryophytes comes under the strong influence of rainfall, since the rainy season is the best period for successful reproduction in these species.

ABSTRACT

No sooner the Covid-19 pandemic began, then the human activities changed suddenly. Various nations across the globe, including Nigeria imposed regulations for working from home. For teaching and learning to continue, the adoption of online facilities must be explored as most universities in Nigeria were known for absolute onsite learning. This theoretical study or position paper, examined the exploration of online facilities for learning in Nigerian Universities as a necessity for post covid-19 pandemic period. Amongst issues of interest discussed were forms of relevant online facilities, historical development of university education in Nigeria, theoretical and conceptual frameworks for the study; benefits and challenges of adopting online facilities for learning in Nigeria; as well as suggestions on how such challenges could be minimized. The study reveals the existence of low quality of online learning due to epileptic power supply, high cost of internet subscription, to mention but a few. The study concludes that the present covid-19 pandemic has posed global challenge thus making the educational sector to look inward. Universities in Nigeria are now embracing online-learning facilities such as Laptop/desktops, Mobile phone, Virtual classroom Multimedia tools like radio, CD-ROM, Digital camera and lots more. The embrace of online-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed lots of lapses and gaps to be filled in the use of online-learning facilities in Nigerian educational system. The study therefore recommends that government needs to be firmer in handling universities’ administration, provide adequate funds as well as suitable educational platforms such as Google classroom, Google meet, Zoom, and so on. Both students and lecturers should also be encouraged to acquire skill-oriented trainings such as hybrid, synchronous and asynchronous and lots more.

ABSTRACT

The study is on the analysis of the effects of corruption and electricity access on economic growth in Nigeria covering 2002Q1 to 2018Q4 time series data. The unit root properties of the series were tested using Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF), Philips Perron (PP) and Zivot-Andrews breakpoint unit root test. Chow test revealed presence of structural break in 2015 which was taken care of by the introduction of dummy variables and interaction terms. The results from Autoregressive Distributed lag (ARDL) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) cointegrating regression revealed that control of corruption and access to electricity have positive and statistically significant long run effects on economic growth in Nigeria, but the short run ARDL results indicated that electricity access and corruption control harm economic growth in Nigeria over the study period, with slow speed of adjustment to long run equilibrium of 2.63% quarterly. This study concludes that corruption is sand in the wheels of Nigeria’s economic prosperity and therefore recommends continued effort in control of corruption and increase in electricity supply for more economic growth among others.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has no doubt adversely affected the global economy. It has forced governments across the world to place restrictions on movement while exempting providers of services to strictly observe social distancing while providing services as a way to contain the spread of the virus. Unfortunately, the educational sector in Nigeria is grossly affected with roughly 10.3 million secondary school students been out of school as a result of the school closures with no or limited access to learning activities. This, to a large extent affected the process of curriculum implementation across all levels of education in Nigeria. This paper therefore examines the implications of COVID-19 pandemic on curriculum implementation in Nigeria and recommended among others, the following: that technologically enhanced educational platforms should be developed which will put into considerations; teacher and teacher interaction, teacher and students’ interaction as well as students and students’ interaction; that e-learning teaching and learning aids should be made available, affordable and accessible for both teachers and students.

ABSTRACT

The spate of insecurity challenge in Nigeria has assumed a dreadful magnitude that not only requires a multi-stakeholder approach, as it is being touted in various quarters, in quelling this conflagration threatening Nigeria’s statehood, particularly the women and the girl-child. It also necessitates a revival and reinforcement of Ethics of Science Education and virtues. In addition, the democratic system in place must begin to deliver the needed social goods so as to improve the standard of living of Nigerians and deliver many citizens from the state of absolute and uncontrolled poverty to which they have been subjected for a long while. The thirst for blood and the preference for violence in expressing pent-up frustration and disenchantment with the state, its citizens and national totem may be a pointer to the need to inculcate science education as core in all human endeavor, particularly to revive the moral sanctity, values and virtues within the socioeconomic, political, religious and that science education should be entrenched in the school curriculum and made compulsory from the basic education level in Nigeria.

1&2Department of Chemical Engineering, Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

Based on the current available technology, commercial biofuels production from microalgae has not been economically feasible as a result of energy requirement for algae culture, Algal biomass drying and lipid extraction processes high. Integrated systems of algae cultivation and biofuels production is one of the technological strategies adopted in the area of algae biofuels Research and Development (R&D) in order to overcome feasibility and techno-economic barriers linked with large scale production of algae biofuels. Therefore this study seeks to assess the integrated process system in order to evaluate or estimate its technical performance, which will provide a solid basis for future economic analysis. In doing this, a study of system integrating biomethane production and biodiesel production using a harvested alga biomass was conducted. Four different scenarios were modelled: methane production, biodiesel production, biodiesel and methane (using residue from biodiesel production), and combined methane and biodiesel production, with each case generating electricity. These scenarios were analyzed and evaluated with respect to products output and energy performance. Microsoft Excel was used to aid in the analysis. The evaluation shows that in 100kg alga biomass the energy that can be generated is in surplus of 16.37 % – 76.69% after supply for on-site use in lipid extraction, transesterification process and anaerobic digestion (AD) system. However, the overall finding from this work is that the feasible technological path of integrated anaerobic digestion and algae cultivation for biofuel production is in the simultaneous combined production of methane and biodiesel and electricity; and this promises viable biorefinery with algae biofuels production.

ABSTRACT

Integration is the process of incorporating racially, economically, politically etc. into the normal stream. It may involve empowering victims of conflict or subcultural group that were segregated upon. The aim of the program is to resolve conflict through sustainable peace building .Successful peace building will require inclusion. This lead to the discussion of inclusive integration .This process requires that the victims of conflict are directly involved in the implementation of peace –building programs. This paper also discusses some of the strategies to be adopted toward a successful and sustainable peace –building process. It is understood that when victims are directly involved in finding solution to their problems (peace-building process), it clears away perceived fear, instead it built trust and honesty in the individuals or victims of conflict. However inclusive integration should follow an established rules and constitution of the country in collaboration with international stake holders’ civil societies worthy of note is that conflict is a relative term. It is not only limited to physical  conflict ,or terrorism, but also include domestic ,office ,religious ,economic and psychological conflict which often times are by product of exclusion –It might also be caused by the political elites ,traditional authorities government authorities that were expected to be fully part of the peace building process but deviated due to their personal interest . We are in a generation where majority prefers self-righteous in the eyes of the few families or relations. A generation that celebrate selfishness, greed, pride and even the suffering of others in our society, we are prepared to lose one of eyes if it will go well with our personality not minding the majority that are suffering .For our selfish reasons we avoid reconciliation. We should have a generation of willing people that can give in their best, so that peace can reign in the society and that everyone is properly integrated to the normal life stream that can lead to equal distribution of resources through trust and love for one another.

MULTILINGUALISM AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

English Unit, School of General Studies, Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic Bauchi.

ABSTRACT

Due to the linguistic plurality of Nigeria, the question of National Development becomes a major concern to its citizens. Language makes man distinct and sets him apart from animals and other inanimate objects. It enables man to organize a socio-political community. Language, more than any other artifact, has transformed and facilitated the development of humans from cave dwellers to city inhabitants who organize themselves into socio-economic groups, states and nations. National development on the other hand is usually described in terms of economic growth, attainment of economic targets, growth rate, increase in Gross National Product (GNP) or Gross Domestic Product (GDP), rise in per capita income, etc. Bamgbose (1991:36). The multilingual setting of Nigerian language did not hinder national development rather it aids its development. In a society where there is full operation of the rule of law, where human rights are not tempered with, where there is freedom of the press via effective use of linguistic diversity, such society will develop in no small measure but if a society lacks all these listed qualities, national development becomes a mirage.

1Department of Mass Communication, Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola. 2Departments of International Relations and Strategic Studies, School of Social and Management Sciences, Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola.

ABSTRACT

The research in its introduction gave an overview of the whole work; looked at the problem embedded on lack of leveraging the mass media for Nigeria’s political and economic development and the objectives of the paper, one of which is to establish the nexus between the mass media, political development, economic development and development generally. It looked at the conceptual clarifications of the major phrases that make up the study. It considered the mass media and its role in national development, mass media and Nigeria’s trudge towards economic growth and development and concluded that development, whether political, economic or in other ways cannot be seen, heard and appreciated by the citizens as affecting their lives positively without leveraging the mass media. One of the recommendations is on the necessity of integrating the use of mass media at all levels of national development – from policy formulation, policy execution and policy evaluation, to making political and economic development really peoples centered by leveraging the mass media.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at promoting national development through prevention of drug abuse among southeast university undergraduates. Descriptive survey research design was adopted in conduct of the study. Two research questions and two research hypotheses guided the study. The population comprised  all the 20 universities in the 5 Southeastern states of Nigeria. Through the application of stratified, purposive and simple random sampling techniques, a sample of 50 lecturers and 500 students were selected, giving a total of 550 respondents. A self-designed questionnaire called Drug Abuse Questionnaire (DAQ) was adopted in collection of data for the study. The face and content validity of the instrument was carried out by experts. Cronbach Alpha reliability technique was used in determining the reliability coefficients of the instrument which gave a coefficient of .81 which was considered high enough and reliable for the instrument. The research questions were answered using mean statistic while the hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient analysis. Findings from the study showed that there is a significant relationship between being an undergraduate and drug abuse in Southeastern universities in Nigeria. Lecturers and students agreed to a very high extent that there is a significant relationship between drug abuse by undergraduates in Southeastern Universities and national development. Finally, the researchers recommended that mass media should facilitate government’s campaign against drug abuse, and avoid such thrilling advertisements and jingles like those of tobacco and alcohol (Liquor) among others.
