Department of Mass Communication, Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State

ABSTRACT

Radio is one of the most accessible media platforms upon which health communication messages are driven. Despite this, studies have shown that Nigeria loses a high number of under 5 children and women of child-bearing age yearly especially those residing in rural communities of developing countries. This study therefore investigated the use of the radio programme (Dokita wa) as tool for driving the adoption of maternal health care practices among women of reproductive age in Ilishan-Remo community, Ogun state, Nigeria. The study utilized the pre-test, post-test experimental design. Questionnaires were distributed to 100 women of child bearing age before and after exposure to the radio programme (Dokita wa). Results showed that women of child bearing age in Ilishan-Remo community had little knowledge about maternal mortality and therefore paid little or no attention to it before exposure to the radio programme. However, after the intervention, the women had broadened knowledge about maternal mortality, its causes and preventive practices and were willing to participate in the war to combat the scourge. The study therefore recommended that in order to put an end to maternal mortality, radio and other media platforms should be utilized in creating more awareness and educating women on safe maternal practices that can help reduce the incidence of maternal mortality.

ABSTRACT

The soils used for food production in Mbaityoug (Tsar) council ward are threatened by different factors, such as soil degradation due to erosion and lack of nutrients. This study assess soils susceptibility to erosion on small-holder farms in Vandeikya local Government area. This research is important because data on the soils from this area is needed for the completion of the Universal Soil Loss Equation, soil erosion risk assessment, and design of conservation structures. Some soil properties and indices of erodibility were determined and an erodibility map was developed. Moisture content, porosity, and clay content were low while permeability and bulk density were high. Dispersion ratio and modified clay ratio were found to be averagely high while erosion ratio and water stable aggregates were low. Erodibility factor K was computed and found to range between 0.05 at Orange farm and to 0.24 at Maize and African pears farms respectively. Ogbono and Orange farm has St of 10.12 and 9.25(stable soil structure).  Soil loss was also noticed to be highest at Maize and African Pears farms (49t/ha/yr). A correlation analysis between soil loss and the indices of erodibility was carried out where it was observed that DR, MCR correlated positively with soil loss while negative correlation existed between soil loss with Erosion ratio and Water Stable Aggregates. Based on known standards and values of Erodibility factor (K) obtained, an Erodibility map of the study area was made. Finally, this study also shows that at the 0.05 level of significance, there is a relationship between Dispersion Ratio(DR),Modified Clay Ratio(MCR),Erosion Ratio(ER) and, Water Stable Aggregate(WSA) when correlated with SL(Soil loss). The study recommends Orange and Ogbono farming practice with the least susceptibility of soils to erosion for soil management and conservation purpose. Improved productivity through research and extension, removal of tree crops should be discouraged and up-to-date information on the smallholder sector.

Department of Mass Communication, Veronica Adeleke School of Social Sciences, Babcock University. Ilishan-Remo, Ogun state.

ABSTRACT

Unmonitored media exposure has been linked with negative psychographic development in children. This is a concern especially with television viewership. In 2011, the Digital Satellite Television (DStv) – the foremost satellite TV provider in Africa introduced the Parental Control (PC) feature enabling parents totally control viewership by restricting and monitoring access to TV stations whether or not they are home. Anchored on social learning theory, this study empirically determined the extent to which awareness of DStv’s PC and perceptions among parents in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos state results in its use. 400 parents were Purposively surveyed from Ikota/Ikate Village, Igbo-Efon/Ikota Housing Estate, Victoria Island, Ikoyi II. Awareness of DStv PC was found to have a strong positive significant relationship with parents’ perception of DStv PC (r = 0.932, p<0.05), and their use of DStv’s PC (r = 0.897, p<0.05). However, the use of PCs among parents was found to be insignificant.  There is a need for parents to be intentional about the need to mediate their children’s television viewership and also, they should combine restrictive mediation with active mediation or co-use mediation.

ABSTRACT

Planetary health argues that urban and natural environment and health are indivisibly linked, in this regard, a growing number of emerging interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, under the auspice of planetary health, have been developed to focus on addressing sustainable development goals numbers 3.9 and 11.3. This is a systematic literature review of transdisciplinary approaches to planetary health focused on addressing SDG 3.9 and 11.3. A systematic literature review search was conducted in five databases and Google Scholar from April 4th to 30th May 2018, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search uncovered 232 articles from which 57 relevant articles were selected and synthesised for the study. The findings of the review reveals potential disciplinary contributions across the environment, health governance, ecological public health, health geographies, global health governance, and sustainable development that could theoretically address planetary health challenges, through transdisciplinary collaborations. Furthermore, the findings highlight how transdisciplinary collaborations for planetary health drawn attention across different levels of decision-making could benefit from the disciplinary contributions. Addressing planetary health requires methodological approaches and coordinated actions that mitigate environmental change impact on human health from the targeted disciplines, through an effective environment and health governance mechanism, at both local and international levels, utilizing Sustainable Development Goal 3.9 & 11.3 stipulations.

Department of Economics, School of Arts & Social sciences, A.D. Rufa’I College of Education, Legal and General Studies, Misau. P.M.B. 004 Misau, Bauchi State Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study empirically examined the roles played by informal sector in the quest for reducing unemployment in Nigeria between the period 1980 and 2018. Secondary time series data for 38 years were used in this study. Data on the variables include formal unemployment, informal sector growth and Gross capital formation. Unit root test based on ADF & PP techniques were conducted to check for the unit root properties of the time series data used in the model. The result revealed that one variable (INFS) was found to be stationary at level I(0), while the remaining   variables (UFs, L & GCF) were found to be stationary at first difference. Co-integration test based on JJ techniques was used to check for the long-run relationship among the variables. The result confirm the presence of long-run relationship. Having found the long run relationship, a short-term relationship which also revealed it presence. We therefore conclude that, informal sector has not substantially reduced the growth of unemployment rate in Nigeria, though it helps in improving living standards and poverty reduction. We therefore recommend that, the central government should formulate a policy which could make informal sector instrumental in unemployment reduction in Nigeria.

While large cities have always attracted visitors from outside, the concept of cities regarding the hospitality industry as potential importance and encouraging its growth is a recent phenomenon. The demand for travel to cities has greatly increased over the last few decades. While many travel for business or convention purposes, others are traveling on leisure time to learn about other cultures, to develop their specific interests, and to seek entertainment. Sustainable urbanization means to move on along with human-environment basis, and it includes all economic, social and environmental aspects. Today, the hospitality industry is a growing industry which plays an important role in sustainable urban development. It is a well-known fact that the hospitality industry is a sector that can contribute to the urbanization of a region. This study aims to assess the role of the hospitality industry in city development. This paper is an applied research and the method used in this paper is descriptive-survey. For this purpose, Bida a city and local government in Niger State, northwestern Nigeria was selected. The population consists of citizens, players in the hospitality industry and urban management experts of Bida Town. A total of 300 questionnaires were completed, and the descriptive statistics and t-test were used to analyze the data. The main indicators of sustainable urbanization, including social sustainability, environmental sustainability, architectural (physical) sustainability and economic sustainability were surveyed. The findings suggest that the development of the hospitality industry has the most positive impact on the economic sustainability index, and the lowest impact on environmental sustainability. Results of the surveys on the economic sustainability index showed that the hospitality industry has been effective in terms of city development with increased investment and improved per capita income. In the end, some suggestions for sustainable urban development in studied areas are offered.

RE-THINKING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA THROUGH EDUCATION REVOLUTION: NIGERIA AS A CASE STUDY. A REVIEW

TOPE IGE

Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State.

ABSTRACT

This article entitled “Re-Thinking sustainable development in Africa through education revolution, Nigeria as a case study” was based on review of related literature. The study identified economic growth, development of civil society, state building and liberal democratic political institutions, including both the rule of law and electoral democracy as development strategies. The study was able to identify development programmes in Nigeria from 1972-2007 and also education policies in Nigeria. The study reveals that there are major challenges militating against education revolution as a tool for sustainable development. Such factors include; curriculum content, intermittent strike action, quality of students admitted and paucity of funds. The paper therefore recommends that if education revolution would serve as a tool for sustainable development, the government must ensure that there is improvement in funding, curriculum content and quality of students.

MANAGEMENT DECISIONS IN THE AFRICAN CONTINENTAL FREE TRADE AREA

OKEKE RAPHAEL CHUKWUMA; & ORAFU EBERE BENEDETH.

Accountancy Department, Federal Polytechnic Oko

ABSTRACT

This analysis comes with several caveats. On the one hand, the results may underes- timate the impacts of AfCFTA because they do not capture (1) informal trade flows or new trade flows in sectors and countries that are not trading in the baseline; (2) dynamic gains from trade (such as productivity increases, economies of scale, and learning by doing); and (3) foreign direct investment (FDI)—improving market con- ditions, competitiveness, and business sentiment will likely stimulate FDI in Africa, thereby leading to higher investment and accelerating imports of higher-technology intermediate and capital goods and improved management practices. Therefore, FDI inflows could boost regional income well above the gains predicted in this analysis. On the other hand, the results may overestimate the impacts of AfCFTA because the anal- ysis does≈not capture (1) the costs of lowering nontariff barriers and trade facilitation measures; and (2) the transitional costs associated with trade-related structural change such as employment shifts and potentially stranded assets such as capital. Furthermore, the results are based on a new data set on gender-disaggregated employment and wages, which requires further vetting by country experts. AfCFTA offers big opportunities for development in Africa, but implementation will be a significant challenge. This analysis identifies key priorities for African pol- icy makers. Lowering and eliminating tariffs will be the relatively easy part—even if it comes, in some cases, with the challenge of how to replace tariff revenues. The hard part will be enacting the nontariff and trade facilitation measures, which is where the analysis predicts the largest potential economic gains. Such measures will require sub- stantial policy reforms at the national level, indicating a long road ahead. Achieving AfCFTA’s full potential depends on agreeing to ambitious liberalization and imple- menting it in full. Partial reforms would lead to smaller effects.

ABSTRACT

This research work focuses on empirical testing of Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) on 30 stocks of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), using the All Share Index as proxy for the market index and the government Treasury bills rate as the risk-free interest rate. The first and second pass regression methodology was applied on monthly data for a period of 5 years from January, 2014 to December, 2018. The study revealed that the slope (beta) of Security Market Line (SML) does not correspond to the market excess return and so the intercept (alpha) is not equal to the risk-free rate over the period. The t-statistics for the intercept is statistically different from zero.  Therefore, we conclude that the results did not support the CAPM standard theory in the selected study period,
