ABSTRACT

The revival of container architecture and in other words, cargotecture with the use of shipping container for accommodation in Nigeria has gone beyond small-scale commercial purposes as Qatar used numbers 974 shipping containers for one of its 2020 FIFA stadiums to be deconstructed and recycled afterwards! Everybody is in need of safe, secured and affordable housing with basic necessity for every family. The innovation is fast being deployed to create Nigeria’s tailored made solution to the housing problem based on its unique potential of quick to build, portability, environmental friendly, affordability and most importantly ease to maintain. The purpose of this paper is to work on the impact of container architecture, how it has fared and the necessary adjustments needed in bridging the gap of housing deficit in Nigeria. The review of extant literatures will be used in showcasing standard container architecture and its relationship to sustainable housing delivery in Nigeria. To overcome this challenge there is the need to shift from the use of conventional high cost of building to something more innovative and have suitable improvement practices that would not only be cost-effective, environment-friendly and easy to construct but also would be acceptable to all people, especially the less privileged. It has been recommended that government and stakeholders should strictly enforce and implement the laws that will promote container architecture and cargotecture towards sustainable development in Nigerian built environment.

JIYA JOHN NINMA; & CHARLES MAKUN

Department of Architecture, School of environmental technology, Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger state.

ABSTRACT

The constant evolution of culture has created new hybrids between art, film, media, advertising, journalism, architecture, and many other spheres that have an impact on human culture. These hybrids sometimes call for a paradigm shift or at least challenge our cultural philosophies or ideologies. As a result of technological transformation through industrialization, most public buildings in Nigeria are beginning to lack its indigenous Architecture within their cultural context. In addition, Studies have shown that most public buildings in Nigeria are lacking indigenous people’s spatial needs and cultural values and they are profound among the minority ethnic groups. As such, a public building such as a media house ought to reflect the culture of its location. This study focuses on evaluating the application of Nupe cultural features in the design of a multimedia studio in Bida. Media houses were selected randomly in Bida, Niger state to know how modernization has influenced the rich culture of the Nupe people. The research method employed in this study is the qualitative research method and the process of observation has been employed for gathering data. An observation schedule was used as an instrument for data collection and these data were sampled using the non-random sampling method. These data were analyzed through content analysis and the findings showed that the cultural feature has not been properly adopted in multimedia designs. The study concludes that a public building such as a media house should reflect the culture of its location and this can be achieved by prioritizing cultural artistic inputs on building by professionals and by extension, promoting the culture and art of its people.

ABSTRACT

Guidance and counselling programme has become an important integral part of the school system in Nigeria. Career information services which are components of the guidance and counselling programme are vital activities because one of the long-term goals of education is career placement. If education is to realize this goal, then learners should have appropriate career information and undertake career exploration to boost their aspirations before making career choices. The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of career information on career aspiration among senior secondary school students in Potiskum metropolis, Yobe state, and the study looked into the students’ aspiration, school counsellors, and principals on the influence of career guidance and counselling. The study was a descriptive survey. The study was conducted at Potiskum metropolis, Yobe state. The target population was all the students from senior secondary school 3 in the 5 public senior secondary schools in the study areas. Simple random sampling was used to select 208 students from 5 schools, for the study. In addition, 4 school counsellors and 4 principals to be included in the sample. The data was collected using a questionnaire for students and interview schedules for the principals and school counsellors and was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer programme. Descriptive statistics (frequency tables, percentages and cross tabulations), were used in data analysis. The findings of the study showed that students, school counsellors, and class teachers perceived that career guidance and counselling played a significant role in the career aspirations of senior secondary school students. Majority of the students in Yobe’s secondary schools were found to have low levels of career awareness. There were no gender differences in students’ career awareness, but female students had higher levels of career planning than male students. The results were expected to be significant in enriching the school managements, ministry of education, school educators, school principals, career masters and teacher counsellors, parents and students through provision of appropriate career guidance and counselling services to secondary school students and beyond.

ABSTRACT

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, a study was done to determine the degree of knowledge, forms, causes, and effects of domestic violence against working-class women victims. The study’s objectives were to ascertain how well working-class women in the FCT were aware of domestic abuse and to present a domestic violence counselling framework to assist victims in coping with it. The study was conducted using a descriptive survey research approach, with four key research topics. A purposive selection method was used to choose 600 respondents from among working-class women in the FCT for the sample. The researcher developed a 40-item Likert form questionnaire to ask the respondents about their experiences with domestic violence. The data were analysed using the mean. The study’s conclusions showed that working-class women abuse victims in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja, Nigeria, have very low awareness and perception levels of domestic abuse by their spouses. Among other findings, the findings offered very high scores for victims of domestic abuse having very little knowledge of domestic violence laws and policies that prevent domestic violence against working-class women. Recommendations: Establishing a framework for counselling services for victims of domestic violence throughout Nigeria, not just in the Federal Capital Territory. Additionally, the Nigerian government should step up its efforts to prosecute offenders and enforce laws and other regulations to reduce the threat of domestic violence in FCT Abuja and throughout the country.

Key Words: Domestic violence counselling, working-class women, and domestic violence.

ABSTRACT

Nigeria as a country being circular in its nature implies a situation where people from other religions and ethnic nationalities and backgrounds are considered duly and considered to be accorded the necessary privileges both in the scheme of things and other wise. Let the above  be as it may. Since the amalgamation of the various parts of the country in the year 1914, the journey to the actualization of great things has seemed an ardous task as the amalgamated protectorates have found it sacrilegious to co-habit with each other making the various parts of the country look tensioned and delicate if not fragile. The question every right  thinking Nigerian should ask him/herself and answer is this. How did we arrive at where we are today?  Is it by intention or omission? How well can we tolerate ourselves and live together? If impossible, how then can we all actualize self determination other than breed bitterness and bigotry. The above statement form the gamut of this study. A handful of data collection techniques were used in this study as interviews, periodicals, journal and the internet. The functionalist theory was adopted for this study thereafter, the conclusion was drawn.

ABSTRACT

The financial scandals which have appeared in recent times have placed fraud at the heart of economic and financial issues. Fraud by executives has disastrous consequences as it results in huge losses for investors and creditors, and especially for the company itself. Most of these frauds were often in the form of accounting and financial manipulation, and they have evolved to change forms. Fraud is a hidden crime and businesses cannot assume that all frauds have been detected. It is extremely unlikely that the detected fraud within an organization will represent the total financial impact of fraud on that organization, or the total loss from fraud they have experienced. It is a fact that some individuals will look to make gains where there is opportunity, and organizations need robust processes in place to prevent, detect and respond to fraud. Fraud impacts on people, industries, public bodies, services, economy, and the environment and all of these can be irreversibly harmed. The research therefore recommends that Auditors and Accountants in organizations and financial institutions should be trained on how to carry out forensic investigation since the fraudsters are now sophisticated in their operation. Also, internal control systems should be strengthened to block opportunities that attract fraud perpetrators and oversight function of the National Assembly be strengthened to make public office holders accountable.

ABSTRACT

Design practice has considerably transformed over the last three decades especially due to the development of digital technology in which the technology of computer graphics and imaging has created a new context, where the original craftsman-like manner of designing has been made relatively obsolete. This study is geared towards looking at the prospects and challenges of this new trend in the design practice and a literature review was used to gain information. The findings showed that digital design has improved many aspects of the design activity and productivity, but it also carries the risk of allowing designers and engineers to rush to conclusion prematurely. The study recommends that proper management processes are required to guard against the challenges.

ABSTRACT

Distortions arising from commodity price shocks are often perceived to be responsible for the highly intractable trajectories of commodity dependent countries‟ macroeconomic fundamentals to be leading to poor industrial growth and hence slow industrialization. This study examines the response of industrial, manufacturing and service sectors‟ output from international commodity prices as well as their shocks in Nigeria using crude oil and cocoa prices as cases. While the study employs the Vector Error Correction Mechanism (VECM) to examine the impact of commodity prices on industrial development, the study uses the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, corroborated by the impulse response and variance decomposition from the Vector Autoregression (VAR) framework, for the estimation of the impact of shocks using quarterly data from 1981: Q1 to 2015:Q4. While the study finds robust evidence regarding the positive impact of commodity prices on industrialisation process, it finds mixed evidence with respect to the impact of commodity price shocks on industrial development of Nigeria. Shocks impact is largely negative but with time lags for oil price and positive but insignificant for cocoa prices. Rethinking and expanding the productive base and capacity of the economy as well as critical public and private sector participation in the industrial, manufacturing and services subsectors will serve as a massive boost to trigger the rapid industrialisation process the economy yearns for.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to examine how Information Technology (IT) investments effect the financial performance listed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). The independent variable of the study is IT investments and the dependent variable is financial performance measured in terms of Return on Asset (ROA). The study used a longitudinal research design covering 13 commercial banks listed on the NSE with secondary data for the period 2011 – 2020 financial years. The effect of IT investments on the financial performance of the banks were analyzed using random effect panel regression after conducting Hausman test to validate the appropriateness of the regression model. The findings reveal a mixed behavioral effect of IT assets on firm performance. while the effect of   Information Technology Investment in Software (ITIS) on ROA of the selected banks is statistically and positively significant, the effect of Information Technology Investment in Hardware (ITIH) on the financial performance of the selected banks is statistically and negatively significant. Therefore, the study recommends that the management of listed Deposit Money Banks (DMB) in Nigeria should invest in both Software and Hardware as a source of competitive advantage in their early days when they were expensive and not available to everyone as against using them merely as a competitive necessity in order to improve their ROA. Finally, the study would be of interest to professionals and a guide to Board of Directors and executive management teams in making IT investments decisions as well as using IT to create business value.

Department of Basic Studies, Platea State College of Agriculture Garkawa, Platea State, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

English is a second language in Nigeria because it is non-indigenous, it was introduced by British Colonialists and Missionaries into the country. The roles and functions English language has assumed since its introduction into the country are outlined. Since Nigeria functions in virtually all spheres of life in English language, a variety known, internationally acceptable and intelligible exists as the standard Nigerian English. What is really of concern is the increasing deviations noticeable in the speech and writings of Nigerians from the grammar of English. The error laden English spoken by many people in the country may well be replacing the standard Nigerian English if the situation is not checked. The root causes of the problem are pointed out recommendations are made towards curbing the negative trend.

Department of General Studies, the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the phenomenon of environmental degradation and its negative impact on women and youth in the Niger region of Nigerian as vivid captured by Christie Watson in her debut novel, Tiny Sunbirds Far, Away. Having diagnosed the various instances of environmental degradation and how it directly affect women and the youth in Niger Delta, the paper similarly unfolds the protest and resistance put up by women and the youth having realized the failure of government both at the national and sub-national levels to alleviate the suffering of women and youth due to activities of the oil companies operating in the region. The paper also examines the modus operandi of both women and youth in their effort to register their grievances on their plight: their frustrations, disappointment and hopelessness and the outcome of such effort. This study adopts ecocriticism as its theoretical framework. Based on the findings of this research, it is evident that the unguided oil exploration activities by multinational oil companies as well as self-induced actions among characters spell doom on the environment as both living and non-living things become negatively affected in all ramifications. It is worthy of note that the author, has succeeded in using  the text under study as channel of creating global awareness towards promoting environmental conservation and various means of entrenching peace in the fictional devastated Niger Delta environment.

ABSTRACT

The sustainability of any society rest solely on the proper management, maintenance and the development of its natural resources to an optimal economic power so as to take care of the societal need. Surveying profession is one of the oldest professions in Africa. And in most of the countries, it was initially a profession that was connected with the military. Most of the countries who were linked with Britain had their first set of surveyors trained in British Military Survey Schools. Surveying and geoinformatics rooted deep in to the field of sciences like mathematics, physics and geography, as well as engineering technology and Defence. The paper reviews some aspect of sustainable development, in the context of the emerging technologies of Geoinformatics, specifically space technology, Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). It expounded on the principles of Geoinformatics and their relevance in agricultural development, security, health, disaster control, transportation, marketing, mining, and engineering construction, which are believed to have an immense influence on national sustainable development. However, a critical analysis of the prevailing situation in Nigeria reveals the shortcomings of the current methods of data collection, analysis and management system. Thus, even though the profession is facing some challenges as a result of industrial revolution, yet the services of geomatist is ubiquitous and a first button to press. This emphasizes the need to adopt Geoinformatic methods to improve in all aspect of economic development to meet with the 21st century challenges. The challenges in this facet are low level of technological development, lack of funds, inconsistency and inept implementation of government policies, low level of investment, collapse of professional boundary among others. Also some prospect of the new phase are discussed, which will give a clear view beyond horizon for the need of geoinformatics to achieve sustainable development. And this is achieved using secondary source of data, by method of interpolation, with clear references at different instances.

ABSTRACT

Airports are important to national economies, the UK inclusive.  While megaprojects like airports propelled economic growth, their impact especially on the environment deserves serious consideration.  Development can only be sustainable if it balances all interests- people, economy, environment and society.  There are a plethora of debates on the feasibility and sustainability of the London Heathrow Airport expansion from economic, legal, and environmental perspectives.  It is one project that produced two opposing camps.  The project also put to test the role of the judiciary in sustainable development and the commitments of the UK Government on sustainability.  In this report, the concept of sustainable development is looked into globally and at the national (UK) level. The arguments of the two opposing camps and how to balance the competing interests are also looked at. Finally, certain recommendations that will hopefully guide law and policy-makers in saving the world we all shared- what sustainability is all about- are proffered.

ABSTRACT

This study examined impact of oil price fluctuation on economic growth in Nigeria. Annual time series data for the period 2001 – 2021 was used. The study made use of Generalized Auto-Regressive analysis. The data used was sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin and OPEC database 2021. The variables used in the analysis are Gross Domestic product (GDP) as dependent variable, oil price, oil price fluctuation and exchange rate and interest rate was used as the independent variable. It was discovered that all the three independent variables show positive and significant impact on defendant variables. There should be need by the government to create some linkages in oil sector to diversify the economy through the proceeds from oil. Judicious investment in infrastructural development by the government to address the compounding issues is important. CBN as a matter of urgency ensure monetary policies that will aid in appreciating the rate of currency in Nigeria.
