*Educational Foundations Department, Faculty of Education, Veritas University Abuja. **Arts and Social Science Education Department, Faculty of Education, Veritas University Abuja.

Abstract

The impact of IDP education on Nigerian national development and the need for counselling services in the twenty-first century was investigated in this research. The report emphasized that a nation’s progress is linked to its educational success, and that education is critical to the development and enhancement of a nation’s welfare. The article went on to look at the concept of all-inclusive education for Internally Displaced Persons. The implications of effective Internally Displaced Persons education on national development, such as the development of human skills needed in various sectors of the economy, the development of social behavior, poverty-reducing effects, improved health and nutrition, and reduced inequality, were also included in the paper. Economic factors, sexual violence and abuse, political factors, school environmental factors, and socio-cultural and religious factors have all hampered the efficient and effective education of Internally Displaced Persons. IDPs are denied the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to Nigeria’s development if they do not receive an education, according to the report. Although significant attempts have been made in the country to increase IDPs’ education, much more has to be done if IDPs are to completely fulfill their potential and contribute to the country’s political, socioeconomic, and technological transformation. According to the document, the government should aim to set aside 26% of the overall yearly budget for educational development, as suggested by the United Nations Organization, in order to offer the required facilities for IDPs’ education, among other things.

Abstract

Generic skills, also known as soft skills have now been regarded to be rudimental to the advancement of graduates’ employability. Hence, emphases are now placed on instructional methods that promote learners’ active participation in the teaching-learning process for the development of skills both in specific academic qualification areas and those known as generic, soft, or transferable skills. This paper, therefore, synthesized the available evidence in the literature about instructional methods employed for the development of generic skills and the challenges of instructional delivery among VTE students at Technical Colleges in Nigeria. A systematic review approach was adopted to search for pertinent literature. Generic/soft skills, challenges of instructional delivery, and Technical Colleges in Nigeria were some of the keywords used to determine the relevant literature from data web-based providers such as Google Scholar, Springer Link, Science Direct, Scopus, and Willey Online Library. The appropriate instructional methods for the development of generic skills are rarely employed for the development of the skills at Technical Colleges as revealed by the study; similarly, dearth of qualified technical teachers, inadequate infrastructural facilities, poor funding, inadequate instructional facilities/materials, inappropriate instructional methods employed, and poor remuneration among others were revealed by the studies as challenges militating against effective instructional delivery for the development of generic skills at Technical Colleges. Hence a suggested roadmap for effective development of generic skills at Technical Colleges in Nigeria. As part of the recommendations, the government should ensure adequate funding of the Technical Colleges programmes, employment of qualified technical teachers, improvement of the remuneration of technical teachers, availing opportunities for technical teachers to update their pedagogical skills through in-service training, works, workshops and conferences; and teachers should employ appropriate instructional methods for the teaching of students at technical teachers. Theses, therefore, will greatly enhance the development of skills by students at the Technical Colleges.

MOHAMMED TUKUR

Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education, P.M.B 1021 Zing, Taraba State.

Abstract

ICT has become integral part of the society and education today. Thus it has attracted attention of scholars and researchers in different field of studies. This explains why the current study assessed teachers’ attitude towards the use of ICT in public junior secondary schools in Jalingo metropolis. The study was hinged on Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and adopted a descriptive survey research design; the population of the study was the entire students and staff of junior secondary schools in Jalingo metropolis. However, 10 schools were randomly selected. Data were collected using questionnaire and analyzed descriptively using mean, frequencies and tables. The findings revealed that teachers in public junior secondary schools in Jalingo are very much aware of ICT and ICT is taught as a subject in schools but the teachers do not have positive attitude to teaching ICT and using ICT for teaching. This is because majority of them do not employ the use of ICT in their teachings; teaching ICT as a subject is dominantly theoretical rather than practical. It means that the students are not exposed to ICTs even though they are being taught ICT as a subject. The study further revealed that teaching and use of ICT in junior public secondary schools in Jalingo metropolis could be enhanced through improved funding of public secondary schools, supply of computers or other ICT devices for teaching and learning, developing ICT manpower among teachers and policy implementation in support of ICT teaching and use among others.
