AN OVERVIEW OF THE FORMULATION, ROLES, MERITS AND DEMERITS OF PHONOLOGICAL RULES IN GENERATIVE PHONOLOGY

SULYMON JIMOH ALANI

Department Of English, School Of Languages, the College Of Education, Lanlate, Oyo State.

ABSTRACT

The hallmark of scholastic researches in English phonology is to achieve language description in the shortest possible way.  This paper seeks to present efforts of scholars in the area of English phonology with a view to deemphasizing the traditional mode of describing sounds as it allows for an indulgence in prolixity.  The paper offers an expository assessment of the phonological rules that were formulated by some generative phonologists. The paper places within its ambit an assessment of the roles of the identified phonological rules and discusses the advantages and the few disadvantages accruable from the application of these rules. On examination of their roles, it is discovered that a handful of these rules are used to express the kind of process involved in phonology and the possible generalizations inherent in them. Chief of their advantages is that they make for a tremendous savings in terms of time, space covered and the number of features used while representing features. The only weighty demerit of these rules is that they are complex. This launches contradiction into the praxis of the phonological rules as this issue of complexity negates the attainment of simplicity. The conclusion reached in the paper is that more gains and ease of description are definitely achievable as the current and future researches on phonological rules progress in a continuum.

Keyword: generative phonology, avoidance of prolixity and redundancy, economy of features,           time and space-covered.

Good Governance: Panacea for Reducing Poverty and Hunger in Nigeria

Nwachukwu Emmanuel Uche

Social Governance and Policy Research Department, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) Ibadan, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Poverty and hunger remain widespread in Nigeria due to the absence of good governance. Over the years, there has been consistent mismanagement of resources leading to poverty and hunger in Nigeria. Reducing poverty and hunger in Nigeria cannot happen by accident, rather through conscious and concerted efforts geared towards achieving this goal. Although, poverty and hunger is a universal phenomenon that affect the socio-economic and political wellbeing of the citizens’ weather in developed or developing countries. However, statistics and data show that poverty and hunger is more prevalent in the developing world of which Nigeria is among. There is therefore, an urgent need for elected government officials to institute good governance at all levels to ensure that citizens are lifted out from poverty and hunger. This paper therefore, examines good governance as a panacea for the eradication of hunger and poverty in Nigeria. The data used were secondary sources on good governance, poverty and hunger reduction in Nigeria. The findings reveal that poor governance, corruption, misplaced allocation of resources, management and leadership failure were responsible for poverty and hunger in Nigeria. The paper concludes that poverty and hunger will persist if the problems militating against good governance in Nigeria are not addressed. Recommendations based on the findings were suggested.
