Abstract

F

or decades, agriculture has been associated with production of essential food crops. At present, agriculture above and beyond farming includes forestry, dairy, fruit cultivation, poultry, beef keeping, mushroom etc. Today, processing, marketing and distribution of crops and livestock products etc. are all acknowledged as part of current agriculture. Thus, agriculture could be referred to as the production, processing, promotion and distribution of agricultural products. Agriculture is the backbone of economic system of a given country. In addition to providing food and raw material, agriculture also provides employment opportunities to very large percentage of population and a high potential for food security and poverty reduction. However, these potentials has remained largely untapped which has led to the dwindling performance of the agricultural sector both domestically and in the international trade over the years. The study contends that government’s agricultural policies over the years in Nigeria recorded partial success, going by this fact the country still face problems of food security, malnutrition and hunger, low earnings from agriculture as the GDP from agricultural sector declines. This study covered the key issues on Nigerian agricultural policies especially as it concerns the formulation and implementation of agricultural policies and programmes as well as their achievements.  The agricultural sector has a strong relationship with the economy; hence, the concern for agricultural policies and the economy. The functionalist theory was adopted for this study.

Abstract

Financial tourism returns can be viewed as yield as profit of the economy, yield as economic impact and yield as contribution to GDP. The effect of tourism on the balance of payment consists of its effect within the country and effect of international tourism. Tourism contribution to gross national product is seen by assessing visitor expenditure at current prices for both domestic and foreign tourism and then subtracting goods and services purchased by the tourism sector. Foreign control of tourism industry results from the encouragement of foreign investments in the early stages of tourism development and the emergence of Multinational Corporation. The tourism multiplier effect consider direct spending, indirect spending and induced spending. National multipliers are usually higher than those of regions because of the larger economic base and the smaller leakages. Forecast of tourism and financial returns towards the economic development a global perspective shows that tourism as a sector will grow at a faster rate than all other sectors in the global economy. Also by year 2020, China will become the largest receiver of international tourist. Moreover, the percentage of the travelling population involved in international travel will increase from 3.5% in 1998 to 7% in 2020. Finally, international tourism arrival worldwide by 2020 will be 1.6 billion with spending in excess of 2trillion US dollars.

Abstract

T

he central objective of the study was to empirically evaluate the impact of corporate governance in the banking sector with respect to bank credit and incidence of bad debts on the level of economic growth in Nigeria.  The study covered between 1980 and 2014.  The choice of this period was based on the fact that the period was characterized by financial crisis and various financial regulatory, monetary and economic policies.  The data were sourced from secondary sources and were analyzed using the co-integration and error correction methodology.  The result showed that the dummy variable for corporate governance was statistically significant in explaining the performances of bank lending. Also, total bank deposits have a significant and positive impact on economic growth while total bad debts have a negative and significant impact on the level of economic growth. It was therefore recommended amongst others; that a more efficient and dynamic corporate governance was a pre-requisite for total bad debts elimination in the banking sector and to deepen the economy through investment. This has become necessary because of the high level of bad debts in the sector and bank distresses.

GLOBALIZATION AND NATIONAL INTEGRATION IN NIGERIA

HAKEEM OLATUNJI TIJANI, PHD

Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Oyo Road, Ojoo, Ibadan

Abstract

G

lobally, as part of responsibilities of the state, guaranty of security of citizens and provision of economic opportunities are fundamental. A state may be tagged a failed state if it fails to provide these basic responsibilities. The Nigerian state has strived to provide economic opportunities for its population. One of the fundamentals for Nigeria to achieve economic recovery is ability of the people, groups and communities to interact freely without losing their cultures, values, traditions and religions. This is aimed at ensuring national integration, which is vital for economic recovery because national integration provides the bond, national cohesion, which state is rested upon to achieve its responsibility. It is the bond that keeps the state as a one indivisible and bourgeoning entity. Ironically, globalization has had implications on Nigeria’s resolve to integrate. Foreign cultures, values and traditions have crept in and the national cohesion needed for the integration is conspicuously eroded. Individualism as a value of the west is transmitted into Nigeria as against its stand on communalism. Individualism as a belief in the West seeks to support the existence of society that it exists for the benefit of individual people, who must not be constrained by government interventions or made subordinate to collective interests. In African communalism, individuals exist to promote the cause of the community. The paper anchors its discourse on Wallerstein’s World System Theory for its salient feature of world system, which sees the rich and powerful prosper at the expense of the poor and the weak. This paper made use of secondary data collection and data were content analyzed.KEYWORDS: Globalization, National integration, Nigerian state, Western culture and African communalism.
