he study examined the impact of locus of control on employee’s job satisfaction and job stress among teachers in Osun State. This was with a view to determining the contribution of locus of control to job satisfaction and job stress, by analyzing the relationship between locus of control and satisfaction among teachers in Osun State Nigeria. Relevant theoretical and empirical literature were reviewed. Primary data were used. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire having three scales including personal data. Four-hundred respondents randomly selected across the primary and secondary in Osun State were used for the study. These respondents cut across different cadres of employees of Osun State. Two hypotheses were tested and the results showed that there was a significant relationship between locus of control and employee’s job satisfaction at 0.05 level of significance (F(1, 398)= 143.485, P<0.05). The result also indicated that locus of control significantly predicted employee’s job stress (F(1, 398)= 37.062, P<0.05). The study concluded that locus of control has an impact on employee’s job performance and job stress among teachers of Osun State. The study therefore recommended that the ministry of education in Osun State has a duty to organize special training on locus of control for her workforce. Also, during recruitment, locus of control needs to be one of the factors to be measured. Furthermore, workers need to be exposed to the outside world which in turn will have an impact on their view of the world and thereafter enhance their locus of control.

Abstract

his Paper examined university education as a panacea for global security and socio-economic Development in Nigeria of the priority areas in developing higher education for socio-economic and national development, a challenge to education management in Nigeria. The need of global security has become the turning point in the international politics, and human security issues have been accepted both by policy makers and international institutions. University Education has been universally accepted as an instrument of change and potent tool for socioeconomic development. It is the only weapon yet known for the achievement of purposeful human development objectives in this era of technology driven world economic order. In coping with the demand of social change, University education in Nigeria has undergone series of changes in order to develop Nigeria’s economy and meet the aspirations of the citizenry. However, the changes in the system have become mere nomenclature as they have failed to produce the desired results in view of the contending issues that are left unresolved. Thus, inability of the Nigerian government to implement the articulated educational policies, insufficient access, and inadequate infrastructure, among other issues are inimical not only to the educational development but its attendant socioeconomic backwardness. Among the recommendations made More effort by the Federal government should be put in place to increase access to university education, by increasing the number of universities especially in the Northern Part of the country, Finally, It is recommended that universities should be adequately funded. By doing this Nigeria is capable of generating knowledge that can make vision 20:2020 a reality.

Abstract
Education for Self Reliance (ESR) was the most important educational principle, which presented the educational philosophy of Nigeria. The purpose of ESR was to set down principles of education, which would serve as a revolutionary influence in the creation of the new social society. ESR is about gaining self-independence, responsibility and democratic involvement; it is education, which is meant to liberate individual from over-reliance. However, the extent to which education in most African countries like Nigeria has been able to meet its objectives in terms of creating a sense of independence is still speculative. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the general aims of Education for Self Reliance and to highlight Nyerere’s recommendations for the policy of Education for Self Reliance with reference to Nigeria. The recommendations include the following: education should be of relevance to the society; educated individual must serve the society, education must be problem solving and education must be work oriented. Under these self-reliance educational provisions, Nyerere comprehensively presents the direction that education should be able to take for countries like Nigeria. Overall, this paper provides a framework upon which tenets of education for self-reliance can be applied in today’s education policy formulation and design of practical-oriented education systems in Africa developing economies.

The sample of the study comprised 400 pupils drawn from the population of the study, using simple random technique. The instrument used for the study was the researchers-structured questionnaire, titled Pupils’ Reading Skills Test (PRST). It was face validated by three experts. Cronbach alpha was used to compute the reliability of the instrument which had a reliability index of 0.74. The findings of this study confirmed there existed significant influences of parental educational qualification and level of income while there existed no significant influence of family size on the pupils’ reading skills. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that Parents should try to minimize the impacts of low income on their children and that every large family should be able to cater for all the children so that no child lags behind in reading skills. In consonance with the recommendations, the educational implications were stated that caregivers have to ensure that no gap is created among children from the different family background since reading is a foundation in educational attainment. Also, caregivers should provide parents with the information on how to develop reading skills of their children in order to equip the pre-primary pupils with the necessary reading skills to succeed in later life.
