Does Level of Information Asymmetry Determines Dividend Smoothing Behaviour? Evidence from Listed Goods Firms in Nigeria

Nuhu Abubakar*

*Department of Accounting, A.B.U. Business School, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

Abstract

Following the work of Lintner (1956), subsequent studies have established the existence of dividend smoothing behaviour among firms. However, the influence of information asymmetry has largely been ignored in Nigeria. This paper examines the dividend smoothing behaviour based on symmetric dividend smoothing models and assessed whether the behaviour depends on the level of information asymmetry.  It utilizes panel data from sample of 20 listed consumer and industrial goods firms in the Nigerian Stock Exchange with records of dividend payment for the period of 2009 to 2018. Fixed and Random Effect regression techniques were used in estimating the modes and the best fitted model was selected based on the level of speed of adjustment (SOA) coefficient. The empirical results revealed that net earnings and previous dividend have significant effect on dividend changes and smoothing behaviour exist in the firms. When firms are categorized into the small and large, dividend smoothing is only presence in large firms not in small ones. Therefore, in consistent with signalling theory, the study concludes that the level of information asymmetry determines the smoothness of dividend in listed consumer and industrial goods firms in Nigeria.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between agent banking, mobile money operators and financial inclusion in Nigeria. For the purpose of this study, a descriptive research design was used. The study population were operators of agency banking and mobile money services located in Jos town and environs. Primary data was gathered through structured questionnaires. Test-retest technique was employed to determine the internal consistency of the instruments by computing Cronbach’s alpha. A Cronbach’s alpha of 0.619 and above was taken as acceptable reliability. Linear regression was used to analyse the data to determine, if agency banking, mobile money operations had a significant relationship with financial inclusion and to indicate the relative strength of the independent variables on the dependent variables. Findings revealed that, that cybercrime and reduction of cost of banking services had a statistically insignificant and negative relationship with financial inclusion, while geographical coverage and illiquidity had a positive, but insignificant relationship with financial inclusion. This study concludes, that agent banking and mobile money is gaining wide acceptance, however this has not engendered, more financial inclusion. This study recommends, that the government should create an appropriate regulatory context in which innovation can thrive. In addition, more coordination is required between banks and operators, in terms of Risk, Training, deployment of technology, cash movement and profit sharing arrangements.

Incrementalism in Human Resource Development: The Case of Bayelsa State Civil Service

Tambou, Joseph Tambara

University of Africa, Toru-Orua, Bayelsa State, Department of Public Administration.

Abstract

This study examines the suitability or otherwise of the incremental model in human resource development in the Bayelsa State Civil Service. The study investigated among others; the extent application of the incremental model impacts on human resource development in the civil service, evaluated the effects incremental model on staff training and productivity of the civil service and the consequences of incremental model on personnel development on public service delivery in Bayelsa State. The incremental model which operates from the premise that the decision maker is not really interested in completely new solutions that are radically different from previous decisions instead his interest lies in improvements on previous decisions is considered the best model to be utilised in human resource development particularly in bureaucratic organisations like the civil service and this model was also adopted as the theoretical standpoint of the study. The findings of the research revealed that, the non-application of the incremental model in personnel administration is accountable for civil servants’ non exposure  to  regular training  workshops  and  refresher  courses  required  to  cope  with  job challenges  and  organizational  changes in Bayelsa State.  Hence,  they  are  denied  the opportunity  of  acquiring  the  relevant  skills  and  knowledge  needed  to perform  tasks  effectively  and  these  have direct effect on the productivity of the service. It was recommended among others that; government should adopt the incremental model in managing its human resources by exposing its employees to regular training and development programmes in order to enhance and sustain their motivation and morale for high productivity and effective service delivery in Bayelsa State.  .

*Department of Business Administration, Kaduna State University, Kaduna, Kaduna State **Department of Business Administration, Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of Board composition and independence on Financial Performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria is to determine the influence of corporate governance of board independence and board composition on the financial performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The research adopts the agency theory which posits that in the presence of information asymmetry, the agent (i.e. director and managers) is likely to pursue interests that may hurt the principal, or shareholders. The source of data used is a secondary source that explored the use of financial statement and annual reports of the deposit money banks. The data were analyzed using both multiple regression analyses of panel data series which reveals that there is a weak relationship between board of directors’ structure and financial performance of the deposit money banks. The study finds out that at 95% confidence level, there is a positive but statistically insignificant relationship between the board independence and financial performance; and negative and statistically insignificant relationship between the board composition and financial performance in deposit money banks in Nigeria. The research therefore recommends that the deposit money banks should improve on the board independence in order to improve on their financial performance.

Abstract

Financial Liberalization and Financial Development have gained grounds in the provision of green light in directing economic performance in advanced economies of the world today. Therefore, this paper aim at investigating into the extent to which these drivers of economic performance among others have been able to enhance the present levels of economic performance in Sub-Saharan African Countries using the Arellano and Bond Panel GMM estimators, to examine the causality between financial liberalization, financial development and economic performance. The data collected from World Development Indicators ranging from 1980 to 2016 due to availability of data. The findings reveal that there exist long run causality between financial liberalization, financial development and economic performance in Sub-Saharan African countries. Specifically, the paper observes a negative causal link between financial liberalization and financial development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, it confirms the fact that in Sub-Saharan Africa, financial development negatively influence economic performance but economic performance positively influence financial development. The paper also confirms that financial liberalization positively influence economic performance while economic performance negatively influence financial liberalization. These finding are the true reflection of Sub-Saharan African countries and their low levels of financial development as well as their dependency. Based on the above, we recommend financial discipline in Sub-Saharan Africa and guided financial liberalization practices as a spring board for economic performance.

Abstract

This study examined the impact of fiscal policy shocks on unemployment in Nigeria based on Lerner’s framework by employing Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) methodology to analyze annual time series data on the relevant variables from 1985-2018. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test for unit root results shows that all the variables were found to be integrated of order one and Johansen cointegration test confirms the absence of long-run convergence among the variables. Vector Autoregression (VAR) residual LM test shows no serial correlation among the error terms. Findings of the SVAR model shows that shocks in public capital expenditure attributes stable negative impact on unemployment. Increase in public recurrent expenditure was found to have positive effect on unemployment while shocks in money supply was found to have insignificant impact on unemployment in Nigeria. The study recommends that government should reschedule its budgeting system by allocating more funds to capital expenditure and less to recurrent expenditure so as reduce unemployment.
